Nonogram (Picross) Mastery Guide: Overlap Logic, Edge Placement & Line Elimination
Master Japanese picture logic puzzles with foundational mathematical techniques: overlapping blocks, edge pinning, gap sizing, and contradictory cell testing.

Essential Nonogram Rules
- The Zero Rule: Any row or column with clue
0is completely crossed out (✕).- The Maximum Span Rule: If Sum(Clues) + (Count - 1) = Grid Size, the entire line is immediately solved.
- The Overlap Intersection: In a row of length 10, a clue of 8 guarantees the middle 6 cells (10 - 8 = 2 empty on each side; cells 3 through 8 overlap).
- Never Guess: Every cell is deterministically solvable via row-column intersection logic.
1. The Overlap Intersection Technique
The most fundamental technique in Nonogram deduction is calculating block overlap.
Suppose you have a row of 10 cells with a single clue of 7:
- Leftmost extreme placement: Cells
[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]are filled. - Rightmost extreme placement: Cells
[4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]are filled. - Overlap Range: Cells
[4, 5, 6, 7]are filled in both extremes.
For a clue of 8 on a 10-cell grid:
2. Multi-Block Minimum Boundary Calculation
When a line contains multiple numbers (e.g., [4, 3, 1] on a 10-cell grid):
- Calculate the Minimum Required Span:
ƒ(x)Span = 4 + 1 (gap) + 3 + 1 (gap) + 1 = 10Formula
- Because the required span (10) equals the grid dimension (10), the entire line is 100% solved immediately:
Every number block is separated by exactly one mandatory empty gap cell (✕).
3. Edge Pinning & Wall Bumping
When a filled cell borders the outer boundary of the grid:
- Edge Extension: If Cell 1 is filled and the leading clue is
4, Cells 2, 3, and 4 must also be filled, and Cell 5 must be marked with an✕to terminate the block. - Wall Bumping: If a cell contains an
✕near a wall, and the remaining space between the✕and the wall is smaller than the smallest available clue, all cells in that pocket can be safely crossed out with✕marks.
Because Cell 1 touches the outer grid edge, the remaining 3 cells of the clue are pushed inward (Cells 2, 3, 4), and Cell 5 is strictly capped with a mandatory ✕ separator.
